Clint Black: The Hard Way on Purpose is now open at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. The exhibit explores Black’s career through stage wear, instruments, handwritten lyrics, photographs, memorabilia, and other artifacts from his life in music, television, and film.

The exhibit opened April 22, 2026, and will remain on display through August 2027. Admission to the Clint Black exhibit is included with general museum admission.

Although Clint Black is being honored with an exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, he has not been inducted as a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Black is a longtime member of the Grand Ole Opry, where he was inducted on January 10, 1991.

What You’ll See Inside the Clint Black Exhibit

Clint Black: The Hard Way on Purpose follows Black’s journey from his early years in Texas to his breakthrough in country music and the career that followed.

The exhibit includes stage wear, instruments, manuscripts, photographs, videos, and memorabilia covering several decades of his career.

Among the items on display are:

• Handwritten “Like the Rain” lyrics. An early draft uses the working title “I Never Liked the Rain” and includes lyrics that differ from the version Black eventually recorded.

• One of Black’s Martin guitars purchased after he received his first substantial paycheck from RCA Records in 1990.

• Lyrics connected to Merle Haggard and “Untanglin’ My Mind.” Black wrote lyrics on his 1991 tour itinerary while helping Haggard finish the song. It later became a Top Five country hit for Black.

• Items from Black’s acting career, including playing cards used during his appearance as the “Sweet-faced Gambler” in the 1994 movie Maverick.

• Black’s director’s chair from the “Summer’s Comin’” music video. The song reached No. 1 in 1995.

• Lisa Hartman Black’s dress and Clint Black’s Versace jacket from the “When I Said I Do” music video. The husband-and-wife duet topped the country chart in 1999.

• A signed script from the final episode of The Larry Sanders Show featuring signatures from the cast, including Tom Petty.

• Black’s desert camouflage fatigues from his 1993 USO tour in Somalia.

• A trophy from one of Black’s first jobs, when he sold newspaper subscriptions for the Houston Post in 1978.

The range of items goes beyond Black’s biggest hits and gives visitors a look at his songwriting, touring, acting, and life before his country music career took off.

Clint Black’s Country Music Career

Clint Black became one of the major artists to emerge during country music’s famed Class of ’89. His debut album, Killin’ Time, produced four consecutive No. 1 singles, including “A Better Man,” “Nobody’s Home,” “Nothing’s News,” and “Killin’ Time.”

Black has also maintained an unusually strong connection to songwriting throughout his career, writing or co-writing his hit material rather than relying heavily on outside songs. His career has included more than 20 million albums sold, numerous awards, acting roles, and his own record label.

He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1991 and remains an Opry member.
