Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black celebrated the red-carpet premiere of the new Lifetime Movie Network film inspired by their beloved country duet.
Nearly 25 years after Clint Black wrote “When I Said I Do,” a graceful reflection on his marriage to Lisa Hartman Black, the song has found a new life on screen. The duet, long tied to one of country music’s most enduring love stories, now serves as the inspiration for a Lifetime Movie Network film starring Sara Drew and Eric Johnson. The film was celebrated with a red-carpet premiere at The Franklin Theatre in Franklin, Tennessee, where cast members and special guests gathered ahead of its debut.
As they stepped onto the red carpet, Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black revisited the song that has long been part of their own love story.
Lisa Hartman Black recalled the first time Clint played “When I Said I Do” for her.
“Clint walks into the kitchen and goes, ‘I'd like to play this song for you. ‘And I'm thinking, ‘Another Clint Black hit. ‘And I listened and it brought me to tears. And I just thought, it's just incredible. So different than anything he had written and so special in so many ways. He asked me to sing it with him and I went, ‘no’. We did it and it was amazing. That was a great experience because he's amazing in the studio. Then we did the video and then it went to number one and then it went to number one again and then we won the ACM Vocal Event of the Year. It was amazing. And to this day, I thank God that I did. I remember the first time we performed, we were in Texas and my heart was racing and I'm like, ‘Oh my God, oh my God.’ And I walked out, and it was amazing.”
Clint Black added, “20,000 people saw her and went crazy.”
How “When I Said I Do” Became a Lifetime Movie
Both Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black served as executive producers on the film, helping shape the project as it moved from song to screen.
“The whole thing, it was so much fun because (executive producer) Adam really empowered us to be a part of the creative process, and to have enough input for us to feel like this was going to be in partnership with our song and our sensibility,” Clint Black said about the movie.
Executive Producer Adam Reed said Black was deeply involved in the making of the film, approaching the project with the same intention he has brought to his songwriting career.
“I remember the moment I sat down with Clint and said, ‘Hey, I know you've protected this song for your entire career. Do you think you could make a movie out of it?’ And now to get to this point - I grew up as a young teenager listening to his music, and now to have been his partner to make this movie and bring it to the world has been exciting. Clint is a very hands-on person, which I love as the producer. I want a partner and an artist that really cares enough to be involved and isn't just going, ‘Oh, sure, make my song into a movie.’ And when you think about it, he's written every song in his entire career, right? So, I didn't think about it when we got into writing the script. But when I tell you he looked at every single word and made sure every single word was right, it was awesome. It just made the movie better.”
Eric Johnson on Filming the New Lifetime Romance
For Eric Johnson, one of the film’s stars, the shoot moved quickly and included some unexpected weather along the way. He described the filming experience as “fast and furious,” recalling the snow and cold temperatures during production.
“I think the biggest thing that we had to worry about was a lot of snow that just kept coming. The hardest thing was keeping warm, but Sarah Drew is an amazing person that warms everybody's hearts, so that was the best part of making this story. It's such an iconic song from such an iconic duo and they're so romantic and eternal it seems. We wanted to bring the romance. We wanted to truly honor that song, and I hope we pulled that off. I don't get to do romance stuff very often so it was a huge treat for me.”
The premiere also brought out familiar names from country music and television, including Sara Evans, who reflected on Black’s impact as both an artist and songwriter.
Sara Evans Shares Clint Black’s Impact on Country Music
“He's had a huge impact, not just on music, but on my music. I grew up listening to him, I think he's probably one of the top five best male country artist of all time. Not just his incredible voice, but his songwriting is awesome, phenomenal. And we are family friends; we’ll spend an evening or holidays together. They are the best people.”
Charlene Tilton Talks Lifetime Movies and “Where The Heart Lands”
Actress Charlene Tilton also walked the red carpet with her daughter, Cherish Lee. Tilton stars in the upcoming Lifetime film Where The Heart Lands alongside Jana Kramer, Tyler Johnson, and John Schneider, premiering May 30 on Lifetime. She also shared why Lifetime stories continue to resonate with viewers.
“The stories are always uplifting. They tug at your heartstrings. The locations are always wonderful; the actors are wonderful.”
Her daughter, Cherish Lee, added, “You know how crazy and busy life can be, right? When you are able to see a film, a performance, it's a moment away.”
For Clint Black, the song’s lasting meaning remains deeply personal, rooted in what it says about his marriage to Lisa Hartman Black and who they are together.
“Hearing her voice come in still gets me to this day. Then to find out that the song has legs and goes off and creates other things, you don't dream about that sort of thing.”
