The CMA Award for Music Video of the Year was first presented in 1985. This comes two years after cable channels CMT and TNN premiered and the demand and success for music videos in country music increased.
However, in January of 1988, CMA board members voted to discontinue the music video of the year category, citing that the category was becoming a "popularity contest," and the original purpose of the award was to recognize technical and creative excellence. The decision was made official on May 3, 1988. According to Billboard magazine, Ed Benson, who was then the associate executive director of the CMA’s, said that if there is sufficient objection from the membership, the award might be restored.
In 1989, after much discussion, the award was reinstated. The decision was made to only award it to the video director, not the artist. This rule went into effect in hopes that the creativity of the videos would be recognized, and voters would not base their selections solely on the artist.
Official criteria for the award in 2025: The award goes to the artist and director. The award is for an original country music video not more than ten minutes in length featuring the entire singular performance of not more than one song or medley. The video must have been first released in its entirety during the eligibility period. Voter should give consideration to all audio and video elements including, but not limited to, the artist’s performance, creative, and production, as well as the overall impact and reach of the music video.
The award has been presented annually since the 1989 award show, although in recent years, the winner is revealed the morning of the award ceremony on social media or on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Artists and directors have the opportunity to accept the award during a non-televised pre-ceremony prior to the CMA broadcast. In 2024, the award was presented during a CMA Awards commercial break and a short video clip was shown later in the telecast.
Nominees for this year’s CMA Music Video of the Year are Megan Moroney, Cody Johnson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton, and Lainey Wilson. Find out the winner when the CMA Awards take place on November 19, 2025, live on ABC.
