“Horseback” serves as the debut radio single from Banks of the Trinity. Written by Randy Montana, Wyatt McCubbin, and Paul Sikes, the song was released digitally on June 12 and sent to country radio on June 15.
The breakup song gave Johnson a career-best radio add day. He also performed “Horseback” on the June 24 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The Story Behind Banks of the Trinity
The title of Banks of the Trinity has a personal connection to Johnson’s childhood in East Texas.
“On this album, I wanted to tell the story about my childhood,” Johnson said when announcing the album.
Hearing the title track brought back memories of growing up in Sebastopol, Texas, near the Trinity River. Johnson said the song reminded him of moments from his childhood that he had forgotten over the years.
That connection also carries over to the album cover. The photograph features Lawrence’s Grocery Store in Sebastopol, a place Johnson visited as a child. He has recalled riding his bike down a dirt road to the store for a cream soda and Blue Bell ice cream before heading back home.
