Brad Paisley is digging into the vault for his latest music project, but he is not treating it like a traditional album.
The Grammy-winning country artist has launched Tacklebox, an ongoing project built around songs from different points in his career. Some of the music comes from Paisley’s extensive catalog of unreleased and unrecorded songs, including material that dates back to the 1990s, when his career was first taking shape. Other songs were written more recently but were inspired by that same era of country music.
Instead of packaging the project as a standard album release, Paisley has been rolling out songs one at a time. The result is a growing collection that gives fans a closer look at his songwriting catalog, his longtime collaborators and the sounds that helped define his early work.
Paisley said the idea behind Tacklebox is rooted in the number of songs he has written and stored over the years.
“I see this ‘project’ as never-ending. It’s almost like the fans have a direct link to my Dropbox or to a playlist that never ends,” Paisley said. “We are calling it Tacklebox because it’s a box full of hooks, country lyric hooks. In this digital age, I have every song I’ve ever written at my fingertips.”
For longtime Paisley fans, the project also carries a strong connection to the country sounds of the 1980s and 1990s. The music draws inspiration from artists including Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn and Alabama, along with production styles associated with George Strait, Garth Brooks and others.
Paisley also returned to a familiar recording space for part of the project. He recorded or re-recorded material at The Castle in Franklin, Tennessee, the same studio where several of his early albums were made.
“This project gave us a license to dig back into the catalog of songs that were never released, that feel like a time period, a style of writing, a sound, and nostalgia,” Paisley said.
Since announcing Tacklebox in May, Paisley has released nine songs from the project. The rollout has included solo tracks, collaborations and songs written with longtime creative partners including Chris DuBois, Frank Rogers, Clint Lagerberg, David Lee Murphy and David Ball.
