A special celebration honoring what would have been George Jones’ 95th birthday is coming to Nashville this September, and the lineup is beginning to take shape.
Jamey Johnson and ERNEST have been added to The Possum’s 95th Birthday Celebration, set for Sunday, September 13, 2026, at 4 p.m. in the Randy Travis Room at The Nashville Palace.
Nancy Jones, widow of the Country Music Hall of Famer, originally announced the event with plans to reveal participating artists leading up to the show. Additional performers are expected to be announced.
George Jones’ Birthday Celebration Comes to Nashville
George Jones was born September 12, 1931, and would have turned 95 this year. The celebration will take place one day after his actual birthday.
Nancy Jones explained that holding the event on Sunday instead of Saturday would make it easier for George’s friends in the country music community to participate after completing their weekend tour dates.
“George Jones remains one of the most beloved country music singers of all time and I could not let this birthday milestone go by and not celebrate,” Jones said when announcing the event.
With Jamey Johnson and ERNEST now confirmed, the concert will bring together artists influenced by Jones and his extensive catalog.

Concert Will Support Country Music Education
The celebration will also benefit organizations working to support music and the next generation of artists and songwriters.
Proceeds will support Concerts 4 A Cause and the George Jones Scholarship at Middle Tennessee State University.
MTSU offers a course examining the life and music of George Jones, and Nancy Jones said supporting the scholarship is one way to ensure his music continues to reach future generations.
“I want to make sure George’s legacy continues through the next generation,” Jones said.
Concerts 4 A Cause previously worked with Nancy Jones on a benefit supporting two Huntsville, Alabama, police officers and their families following a 2023 shooting.
Remembering George Jones
Nicknamed “The Possum,” George Jones remains one of the most influential voices in country music history.
His career included more than 160 charting singles and songs including “She Thinks I Still Care,” “The Race Is On,” “The Grand Tour,” “White Lightnin’,” “A Good Year for the Roses,” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”
Jones earned his first Top 10 country hit with “Why Baby Why” in 1955 and reached No. 1 for the first time with “White Lightnin’” in 1959.
His 1980 recording of “He Stopped Loving Her Today” became one of the defining songs of his career, earning Jones a Grammy Award and helping him win back-to-back CMA Male Vocalist of the Year awards.
Jones was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992 and continued recording and performing until shortly before his death in 2013.
