Country Music Hall of Fame member and Alabama co-founder Randy Owen is sharing his life story in a new documentary set to premiere on Alabama Public Television.

My Home’s in Alabama: The Randy Owen Story will air Saturday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m. CT. Produced by Jacksonville State University’s Longleaf Studios, the film follows Owen’s journey from his childhood in Fort Payne, Alabama, to becoming the lead singer and songwriter behind one of country music’s most successful groups.

The documentary combines personal reflections with footage of the Alabama landscapes that shaped Owen’s life and music. Family members, friends, and fellow artists also help tell his story, including Alabama founding member Teddy Gentry, Jamey Johnson, Riley Green, and others.

“I never imagined a kid from Fort Payne, Alabama would one day stand here, guitar in hand,” Owen says in the film.

Randy Owen Reflects on His Alabama Roots

While the documentary explores Owen’s career and Alabama’s rise to international success, it also focuses on the people, places, and values that have remained important to him.

Owen grew up working on his family’s farm near Fort Payne before attending Jacksonville State University as a first-generation college student. His musical influences included church music, gospel singings, family harmonies, and the literature he studied while earning his degree.

The film also traces the development of Alabama from the group’s early performances in Myrtle Beach to its emergence as one of the most influential acts in country music history.

As Alabama’s unmistakable lead voice, Owen helped introduce fans to songs including “Mountain Music,” “Dixieland Delight,” “Feels So Right,” “Love in the First Degree,” “Tennessee River,” “Song of the South,” “The Closer You Get,” and “My Home’s in Alabama.”

Rather than concentrating solely on awards and chart accomplishments, the documentary examines the faith, family, community, and humble beginnings that continue to define Owen’s life.

My Home’s in Alabama: The Randy Owen Story was co-directed by Dr. Seth Johnson and Will Payne and produced by Emily Duncan.

Students from Jacksonville State University’s film, theater, art, and communication programs worked alongside faculty members and industry professionals as part of the production crew.

The Aug. 8 broadcast marks the documentary’s television debut. The film previously premiered during the grand opening celebration for the Randy Owen Center for the Performing Arts at Jacksonville State University.
