Cyndi Thomson Joins Vince Gill for Heartfelt New Song “Eighteen Summers”

The country singer and songwriter co-wrote the reflective collaboration as she celebrates 25 years since “What I Really Meant to Say.”

Cyndi Thomson continues the next chapter of her return to country music with “Eighteen Summers,” a heartfelt new collaboration with longtime friend and songwriting partner Vince Gill.

Available now, “Eighteen Summers” is the title track from Gill’s 50 Years From Home: Eighteen Summers EP. Thomson co-wrote the song with Gill and joins him on the recording, reflecting on parenthood, family, and how quickly the years spent raising children can pass.

“When Vince and I wrote ‘Eighteen Summers,’ we knew we were writing about something every parent would understand,” Thomson said. “But now, with my own children growing into adulthood, I hear the song in an entirely different way. It reminds me how quickly those years pass and how the ordinary moments become the ones you treasure most.”

The song reunites Thomson and Gill after years of friendship and shared songwriting, with their vocals bringing an added sense of warmth and personal experience to its message.

“Getting to sing this with Vince, a dear friend and one of the greatest artists I’ve ever known, makes it even more meaningful,” Thomson continued. “I hope this song encourages people to slow down and soak up every season they’re in.”

“Eighteen Summers” arrives as Thomson celebrates the 25th anniversary of the music that first introduced her to country audiences. Her debut single, “What I Really Meant to Say,” reached No. 1 following its release in 2001 and became the highest-charting debut single by a female country artist at the time.

The song appeared on Thomson’s debut album, My World, and established her as a distinctive new voice known for emotionally honest songs and relatable storytelling.

Twenty-five years later, Thomson is honoring that breakthrough while also building toward what comes next. Since returning to music, she has released “Perfume on the Floor” and a reimagined version of “Life Ain’t Always Beautiful,” a song she co-wrote that was later recorded by Gary Allan.

With more new music and special projects planned, “Eighteen Summers” connects Thomson’s past and present, pairing the sincerity that defined her early career with the perspective gained through family, friendship, and the passage of time.
